Macupdate and some of these other places that have their own advertising should be watched out for. Some of the advertising is for software that does not conform to basic safety measures. I've repeatedly asked MacUpdate for instance to find a way to block advertising for MacKeeper. Its sanity has been already questioned on Apple Support Communities more than once.
So while I agree some third party download sites are good to get old software from, the user has to be cautious what is advertising, and what is actual software.
